Bhubaneswar | July 17, 2025A 12-hour statewide bandh was observed in Odisha today, called by the Congress and seven other opposition parties in protest of the tragic self-immolation of a college student from Balasore. The incident sparked statewide outrage, with opposition parties demanding a judicial inquiry and immediate action against those responsible.
The bandh, which began at 6:00 AM and lasted until 6:00 PM, brought normal life to a standstill across several districts.
What Was Affected?
All schools, colleges, and markets remained closed.
Public transport was disrupted statewide, including buses and trains.
Major cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Balasore saw road blockades and protest gatherings.
National Highway 16 was heavily blocked in multiple areas.
Train services were halted at several stations due to protestors occupying the tracks.
Security Arrangements
The Odisha government deployed over 200 platoons of police across sensitive regions. Drone surveillance and road barricading were carried out to maintain law and order.Cities such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Balasore were under high alert throughout the day.
Leaders React
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly condemned the incident and blamed the state government for failing the student:“This is not suicide, it is the murder of a system. The Chief Minister and Education Minister must be held accountable.”
Other leaders from CPI(M), AAP, and left parties echoed similar sentiments, demanding justice and resignations.
